The Hamburg Südamerikanische Dampfschifffahrts-Gesellschaft was founded on 4 November 1871. Shortly afterwards, Hamburg Süd , as it soon became known, opened a monthly liner service from Hamburg via Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro, Bahia and Santos with three steamships, the „Rio“, the „Santos“ and the „Brazil“. Due to the dynamic economic development in the still young German Empire, the liner service between Europe and the major ports of the South American east coast offered enormous opportunities. While more and more raw materials and plantation products were transported to Germany, countless emigrants used Hamburg Süd’s steamships to make their way to the New World. In both freight and passenger traffic, the Hamburg shipping company set standards with ever more modern ships and innovative technologies. Legendary ships like the „Cap Polonio“ and „Cap Arcona“ became symbols of luxurious travel.

Just in time for the anniversary, journalist and author Matthias Gretzschel vividly traces the 150-year history of Hamburg Süd: from its beginnings and the difficult phases during the two world wars, its twice total loss of the fleet, through the period of reconstruction after the Second World War as part of the Oetker Group, to the present, which the company has been shaping since 2017 under the umbrella of the world’s largest container shipping company, A. P. Moller-Maersk. Numerous people whose work was and is connected with Hamburg Süd convey an impression of the fascination associated with this unique shipping company, which is also perceived all over the world as an ambassador of the city that bears its name. Fascinating historical and current picture documents make this exciting history book a delightful coffee-table book at the same time.
